Clement Greenberg was an American art critic who greatly influenced the development of contemporary art. A key theorist of abstract expressionism, the author of the idea of "flatness of the picture". Greenberg became known as an art critic for his article "Avant-garde and kitsch". In the article, Greenberg contrasts two main, in his opinion, trends in art -the avant garde, as a continuation of academic art in new conditions, and kitsch, as a product of bourgeois propaganda. Martin Gayford Modernists and Mavericks: Bacon, Freud, Hockney and the London Painters
Martin Gayford’s masterful account of painting in London from the Second World War to the 1970s, illustrated by documentary photographs and the works themselves.
